Highland’s China Missions Team just returned from a survey trip to Hangzhou, China. Hangzhou is one of four cities in which the Highland Church of Christ in Memphis is considering working (the other three are Beijing, Wuhan, and Qingdao). Each of these four cities offers unique opportunities and resources. Leaders in our Chinese Ministry at Highland have identified these four cities as the ones in which Highland is most likely to experience fruitful ministry. We found Hangzhou to be an especially beautiful and vibrant city. It is filled with refreshing green spaces like the World Heritage Site West Lake and with warm and friendly people.
But in general we are drawn to these cities and to China because of the great need. As few as 8% of China’s 1.3 billion citizens are followers of Jesus. Many, we have learned, know very little about Jesus. And when they are given the chance to hear about Jesus, they respond favorably. There is a great need to tell the billions in China about Jesus. We want to respond to this great need. In this brief series “Why China?” I’ll share more about Highland’s plans and about our recent trip to Hangzhou.
