The United States was the first country in the world to define and designate wilderness areas through law. Through it more than 105 million acres of wilderness have been preserved so that people can hike it, hunt in it, take pictures in it, stargaze in it. Wilderness also provides clean water and air and places to see wildlife in a natural setting.
